Background

  • Depression is the leading mental health cause of the global burden of disease
  • Brief psychological treatments are effective and are recommended as the first line of care
  • Inadequate numbers and inequitable distribution of mental health specialists are major barriers to mental health service delivery;
  • In India, fewer than 10% of patients with depression have access to adequate care
  • This treatment gap is partly due to the reliance on mental health experts and in-person training and supervision
  • Task-sharing involves training non-specialist providers (NSPs) in the provision of mental health services
  • NSPs can effectively deliver brief psychological treatments for depression and other common mental health problems in a wide range of contexts.
