Background

  • NAMASTE is a research and capacity development programme being implemented by Sangath (India), University of Manchester, Autism Care Nepal Society, College of Paediatrics, Sri Lanka, in collaboration with other organisations from the region and internationally.
  • It is a funded by the National Institute of Health Research using aid from the United Kingdom (UK) government to support global health research.
  • NAMASTE builds on the systematic research that Sangath has been conducting since 2009
  • Initially commenced with exploring family experiences with their child with autism and participation in a national collaboration for the first multi-site prevalence study for developmental disabilities conducted in India
  • Followed by adapting an evidence-based intervention developed in the UK through two randomised controlled trials and a definitive evaluation which was completed in April 2024 in New Delhi.

Objectives

NAMASTE aims to design and implement a novel, evidence-based pathway for early detection of neurodevelopmental disabilities, focusing on autism and intellectual disability in young children and linking these to early interventions through a program of research, training and capacity development at four sites in India, Sri Lanka and Nepal.
